History of medical cannabis in Nevada

On November 7, 2000, Nevada voters passed Question 9, amending the state constitution to sanction medical cannabis. Subsequently, various statutes were put in place to regulate use and possession. These have been amended through the years. Currently, patients may purchase a maximum of 2.5 ounces of usable cannabis and can grow up to 12 plants. Article 4, Section 38, of the Constitution of the State of Nevada provides for the use of cannabis for the treatment or alleviation of cancer, glaucoma, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, persistent nausea, epilepsy and other disorders characterized by seizure, multiple sclerosis and other disorders characterized by muscular spasticity, and other conditions approved for such treatment.

In 2013, more than a decade after voters first approved medical cannabis, the Nevada legislature allowed for safe, regulated access to medical cannabis. On November 8, 2016, cannabis for recreational purposes was made legal. As a result, numerous dispensaries have come up in the state. Recreational users may purchase up to one ounce at one time.

LVMMA

The Las Vegas Medical Cannabis Association was formed in 2014. More than 100 members strong, its membership is made up of dispensary owners, production facilities, cultivators, labs, patients, doctors, nurses, and researchers. The mission of the LVMMA is to provide education to business owners and the public about cannabis strains and cannabinoids. Their goal is to have patients come to Nevada to learn what strains can be used in treating Crohn’s disease, seizure disorders in children, multiple sclerosis, ADD and ADHD. They believe that Nevada can be a leader in the medical cannabis industry through research, promotion, good regulation, and job creation.
